1913

The founding year – Astra was founded in Sweden

1977

Tamoxifen, ICI’s drug for treatment of breast cancer is registered in the USA

1988

Sir James W. Black, discoverer of the beta-blocker and employee of ICI Pharmaceuticals, receives the Nobel prize for medicine

1993

Zeneca Group PLC was formed when ICI demerged three of its businesses

1999

Astra and Zeneca merge, creating AstraZeneca

2005-07

Entry into biotechnology through acquisition of KuDOS, CAT, Arrow and MedImmune

2014

AstraZeneca acquires the rights to the respiratory division of the Spanish pharmaceutical company Almirall

2016

AstraZeneca acquires the respiratory division of Takeda Pharmaceutical

Today, AstraZeneca employs 70,600 people (as of 2019) in over 100 countries around the world. The company has been active in Switzerland since 1976, since 1999 with AstraZeneca AG in Baar, in the canton of Zug.
