At AstraZeneca, our scientific research focuses on complex diseases that present significant health challenges. By understanding emerging biological mechanisms, we develop targeted therapies and advance treatments to improve outcomes for Swiss patients across five core therapeutic areas: Oncology, Cardiovascular, Renal and Metabolism (CVRM), Respiratory & Immunology, Infectious Diseases, and Rare Diseases.

Research

Research and development lie at the heart of AstraZeneca. In 2025, we invested 14.2 billion US Dollars (24.2% of our total revenue) in research and development. According to the magazine Fierce Biotech, AstraZeneca is the fourth biggest investor in research and development as a proportion of its sales.

By 2030, AstraZeneca is planning to bring at least 20 new medicines to market. In Switzerland, we expect the approval of over 40 new therapies between 2026 and 2028 with the potential to improve current treatment standards on to the market.

Development

We relentlessly drive our research and development in search of new insights and the next breakthrough. On average, it takes twelve years to develop a new medicine. The chances of success are around 10 per cent, because unsatisfactory efficacy or severe side effects are often only identified in costly clinical trials.

Out of 10,000 compounds developed, only 20 make it to the preclinical phase, and of these, only ten will in turn make it to the clinical phase. Of these, only one drug will ultimately make it to market.
